Springfield Catholic claims district title

FAIR GROVE — Bekah Bade netted four 3-pointers and 29 points to power Springfield Catholic past Blue Eye 63–55 in the Class 3 District 11 championship game on Saturday.
The Lady Irish move on to meet Mt. Vernon in Sectionals on Wednesday.

Irish move into semifinals (Boys basketball roundup)

FAIR GROVE — Jeff White broke loose for a 19-point effort in Springfield Catholic’s 56–53 first-round Class 3 District 11 triumph over Conway on Tuesday.
The third-seeded Irish received 11 points apiece from Chad McBride and Mitchell Richardson.
Catholic advances to meet second-seeded Fair Grove in a semifinal on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The other semifinal pits Strafford against Seymour.

Lady Cardinals’ Jaeger COC Large Schools Division Player of the Year

Webb City junior Kaitlin Jaeger has been named the Central Ozark Conference Large Schools Division Player of the Year in a vote of league coaches.
Jaeger is joined on the All-COC First-Team by teammates Hailey Roderique and Kyndal Clark, along with Nixa’s Bethany Funderburke and Emily Walker.
The Second-Team is made up of Willard’s Sammie Gathercole, Nixa’s Randa Raper, Republic’s Kayce Duvall, Ozark’s Melanie Williams and Branson’s Kristina Dodd.
Honorable mention recognition goes to Branson’s Cailynn Hayter, Webb City’s Scharenda Campbell, Carthage’s Kaylee Morgan and Ozark’s Hannah Gomez.

Nixa, Republic capture district titles (Boys basketball roundup)

SPRINGFIELD — Nixa claimed the Class 5 District 11 championship by beating Branson 62–47 in an all-Central Ozark Conference Large Schools Division final on Saturday.
For Branson (24−4), the 47 points is a season-low.
Nixa’s defense held the Pirates to 22 second-half points.
Zac Hill topped the Eagles with 18 points. Avery Dingman paced Branson with 21.
Elsewhere on Saturday:
— Republic came back to win the Class 4 District 11 championship in its 43–33 triumph over fellow Central Ozark Conference Small Schools Division member Reeds Spring.
The Tigers trailed 25–14 in the third quarter, before turning the game around. Nic Yocum triggered the winners’ rally, scoring all 15 of his points in the second half.
Reeds Spring received 16 points from Ben Selby. The Wolves scored 13 second-half points.

FAIR GROVE — Springfield Catholic made it to the semifinal round in Class 3 District 11 action by downing fellow Central Ozark Conference Small Schools Division foe Hollister 55–44 in a first-round game on Saturday.
The Lady Irish received 18 points from Danielle Lampe and 16 from Bekah Bade.
Hollister’s Cassandra Kimbrough scored 19 points.
Catholic will meet Fair Grove in a semifinal on Wednesday.

Four COC teams to play for district titles

Branson, Nixa, Republic and Reeds Spring will square off on Saturday for district titles after all four posted semifinal wins on Thursday.
In Class 5 District 11 at Springfield Parkview, the Pirates whipped Springfield Kickapoo 73–41 and the Eagles outlasted Springfield Parkview 60–48.
Branson received 23 points and 13 rebounds from Dana Thomas and 18 points from Tee Helsel.
Branson and Nixa will tangle at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
In Class 4 District 11 at Republic, the host Tigers whipped McDonald County 65–30 and the Wolves slipped past Cassville 62–54.
Ben Selby’s 19 points paced Reeds Spring.
Republic and Reeds Spring will meet on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Lady Wildcats drop first-round game (Girls basketball roundup)

CARTHAGE — Neosho’s season came to an end as the Lady Wildcats fell to Springfield Hillcrest 61–31 in a Class 5 District 12 first-round game on Tuesday.
Shea Wyatt’s nine points topped Neosho.
In the district’s other opening-round game, Springfield Central edged Joplin 65–57.
In semifinal play on Thursday, top-seeded Willard will meet Central and second-seeded Carthage will play Hillcrest.

CARTHAGE — Fifth-seeded and tourney host Carthage upended fourth-seeded Neosho 55–50 in Class 5 District 12 action on Monday.
The Tigers received 13 points from Ethan Wiggin and 11 from Desmond Buerge.
Neosho was led by Alex Wise’s 16 points and Michael Lowe’s 13.
In the district’s other first-round game, third-seeded Willard edged Springfield Central 55–51.
Tim Huskisson’s 17 points paced the Tigers.
In semifinal play on Wednesday, Carthage will meet top-seeded Springfield Hillcrest and Willard will tangle with Joplin.
On Tuesday:
— Springfield Catholic rallied from an eight eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to down Fair Grove 50–45.
Jeff White netted five free throws down the stretch to cap his 16-point night, Jack Wolfe collected 11 points and seven rebounds and Mitchell Richardson added 10 points.
The Irish improved to 14–10, while Fair Grove fell to 17–7.

Lady Pirates claim district opener (Girls basketball roundup)

SPRINGFIELD — Branson’s starting front line of Michaela Dapprich, Kristina Dodd and Ruby Stevens combined for 40 points in the sixth-seeded Lady Pirates’ 60–53 win over third-seeded Springfield Parkview in a Class 5 District 11 first-round game on Monday.
Dapprich led the Lady Pirates (21−6) with 18 points. Guard Cailynn Hayter netted 17, while Dodd and Stevens both had 11.
Branson moves on to meet second-seeded Springfield Kickapoo at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Elsewhere on Monday:
— Rogersville downed Buffalo 67–49.
— Springfield Catholic had its winning streak halted at eight games, as Mt. Vernon edged the Lady Irish 77–69.
Catholic trailed throughout, but threatened late by scoring 29 points in the fourth quarter.
Bekah Bade poured in 19 of her 28 points in the second half and Danielle Lampe netted 22.
The Lady Irish (15−9) meet Hollister at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in a Class 3 District 11 contest at Fair Grove.

Five COC wrestlers crowned state champions

COLUMBIA — The Central Ozark Conference produced a handful of state champions, with Neosho having a trio of champs, at the MSHSAA State Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.
Class 3 featured a pair of All-COC finals.
At 112, Neosho’s Joe Barnes edged Carthage’s Nate Kelley 3–1. Barnes finishes with a 43–7 record. At 119, Neosho’s Trevor Hughes downed Carthage’s Trevor Feagans 5–1. Hughes ends with a 36–6 mark.
Ozark’s Dylan May claimed the 135-pound title by pinning Kearney’s Tanner Minder in 4:55. May finishes with a 30–4 record. Neosho’s Blake Stauffer was a dominating 171-pound state champion. His closest match at state was an 11–4 victory. Staffer ends with a 52–1 mark.
Class 3 state runners-up included Neosho 103-pounder Nate Rodriguez (48−6), Neosho 130-pounder Jared Brock (30−10), Ozark 152-pounder Zeb Spicer (38−7) and Willard 215-pounder Joel Wyman (43−2).
In Class 2, Rogersville senior Sam Zimmer three-peated as a state champion en route to winning the 130-pound title. He scored a 3–1 decision over Pleasant Hill’s Joshua Hastings in the final to up his record to 46–2.
Class 2 state runners-up were Bolivar 119-pounder Eric Hughes (41−2) and Reeds Spring 135-pounder Steven Morey (43−1).
